1.) Great Purchase

I just bought this lantern for camping and it works great. I would highly recommend it. It takes a lot of batteries but it lasts a long time and is very bright. The smaller version takes less batteries but works about the same. I have now added this lantern to my hurricane supplies, as it will come in handy if I lose power this season.

I bought two of these 8 D-cell lanterns for an impending storm, and sure enough the storm happened. Two of these lanterns could light the main floor of our house enough to comfortably walk around and see everything. I was told that one of our neighbors thought we had a generator. So, stock up on batteries next time there's a sale, and be ready for those power blackouts.

6.) A great light back-up in time of bad weather
Reviewed by: Book Collector LA
Rating:
After Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana three years ago, local news stations provided a list of items that families should keep handy in case of emergency situations. I found this Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern (Personal Size) to be perfect for my needs. In fact, I'm thinking I need one for both ends of the house to prevent carrying back and forth.

I have not had to use it yet, but I have gone through the procedures of replacing batteries (Oh my, I need back-up packs of D-batteries--4 are needed). The length of time for the lighting is 14 hours on high and 23 hours are low. I agree with other reviewers: it is hard to see much difference between high and low. I have also practiced replacing bulbs.

All is good. I hope I don't need this Colman Lantern, but I'm ready if I do.

7.) I SNEER AT HURRICANES!
Reviewed by: hotdog Houston, TX USA
Rating:
Well, O.K., I don't sneer at hurricanes. But after Hurricane Ike and a week without power, we decided to upgrade our emergency lighting to more than flashlights, candles and chemical light sticks.

I bought three of these family-sized Coleman lanterns and three MicroPacker lanterns (also reviewed). The first time I turned on this family-sized lantern I said "WOW!" This is a serious light! I measured the light output of this lantern (I'm a photojournalist) and discovered it puts out half the light of a bare 40 watt bulb, but much, much more light than a 25 watt bulb. That is plenty of light for reading and walking around like a human being instead of stumbling around with flashlights.

The "low" setting is almost as bright as the "high" setting (only one-half stop dimmer), but extends the battery life from 17 hours to a fantastic 28 hours! I figure one set (8) of fresh "D" cells should last though a week of dark nights.

The family-sized lantern is tough and well-made. It's not waterproof, but I wouldn't worry about taking it out into the rain. It doesn't have rubber seals, but the nice, tight fittings should keep it dry.

One minor point: the large clear housing is a Coleman tradition, but a simple clear cylinder would be more streamlined and compact. The lantern is about the size of a full-sized gas mantle unit. I wouldn't backpack with it, but it is a great unit for emergencies and base camps. Now if Coleman only made a battery-powered air conditioner . . .

I was so impressed that I got one for each of my kids and their families, and for a couple of friends, so that none of them will have to be in the dark in the way that and for as long as I was.

I also got a set of each for my mother. these thigns are the best of their kind i've seen so far, they these smaller models take only 4 D batteries to work and they last on the low setting for like 20+ hours!!!!! there is no noticial difference in light output between the High setting which last for like 17 hours or the Low setting which lats for the mid 20 hours range so just use it on Low setting and save your battery charge.they use floursent bulbs and are very light weight so very very easy for anyone to carry by their handles from room to room.I use the large family one to keep in a main room and the two smaller indiviual models here for both my wife and I each to carry from room to room as we need while moving around the house.the lamps are plastic but very well made and seem very sturdy to me.You can't go wrong getting these for how safe they are made of plastic with no glass parts except for the floursent blub inside and that they use the much cheaper D batteries.

This is a great little lamp with plenty of light for reading, etc. I have a small, solar-powered camper and use this lantern instead of my camper's led lights. I use rechargeable batteries and just "top them off" in the morning. If I do forget my charger or batteries, you can find the D batteries anywhere. Many battery powered lanterns (Coleman included) have batteries that are not replaceable. So if you forget to charge your lantern, you're out of luck.

I bought this lantern because we didn't have enough light for our trip last year. This lantern performs beautifully. It's nice and large, doesn't require flammable fuel, isn't too heavy -- and it's bright white light . . . bright enough to light up our 10' x 10' canopy area.

There is a high and low setting, but the low setting is not very much lower than the high setting, so we set it on low to conserve the battery life. I've just gotten back from a two night camping trip and this lantern has plenty of juice left in it.

I am happy with this lantern and would buy it again.

I purchased the "Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight" for $20 at Amazon to replace the same product which stopped working. While I was at it I bought one of these lanterns. I wanted to have a second and decided to try this for variety, instead of two of the former.

Coleman products have served me well and I like both of these products. However, I was puzzled to see that the light was brighter from the large flashlight than the lantern.

Both products have u-tube fluorescent lighting and both require 4 D batteries, but they clearly (to me) are different in their brightness. Since both products cost $20 and the flashlight also offers both a halogen bulb AND the u-tube, I would recommend buying that instead.

Had I never owned the flashlight version I would have rated this 5 stars which is how I would rate the flashlight.

Something to think about if you want a product to get you around your house when the power fails. Coincidentally, 3 days after these Colemans arrived we lost power for 45 minutes and then a week later for 1 1/2 hours (Philadelphia, PA). These are indispensable to me. I don't do camping but if I did I would still prefer the flashlight for its brighter tube.

Hope this helps you with your decision ... Sam
